The Delhi
U-19 team selection has become a sort of a joke. After days of indecision, the
Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) finally announced the names that
will travel to Haryana for the national one-dayers for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
The names that were released on Saturday evening, however, had a strange rider
to it --- as of now, only 12 of the 16 players are eligible to play for Delhi while
the remaining four are subject to age verification. Members of the sports
committee say things will be finalised on Monday morning when the details of
tests and a clearance letter will come.
The medical
test reports of Abhishek Vats, Venkat Shivam Pulligadda and Rishabh Pant are
awaited while in the case of Prashant Bhandari, the selectors are waiting for clearance
from the BCCI, which is assessing his original documents. Prashant, who is the
vice-captain of the team, is being tossed around because a member had filed a case
in court questioning his real age.
While U-19 chief
selector Nikhil Chopra wants Prashant in the team but the sports committee don’t
want. Some people say that Bhandari’s name is being objected to because he was
the choice of the previous sports committee.
What lends credence
to the reports of differences is the fact that the age verification has taken
pretty long and it is being awaited just three days before the tournament
begins.
Neverthless,
it remains to be seen whether only 12 people leave under the charge of coach
Raj Kumar Sharma or whether all of them go.
The twelve selected: Pratyush Singh (Captain), Himmat
Singh, Pranshu Vijayran, Hardik Pahwa, Dinesh Mor, Himanshu Sangwan, Mohd.
Bilal, Sarthak Ranjan, Hiten Dalal, Sarang Rawat, Rajesh Sharma, Sumit Mathur.
