Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan, both close chums from Delhi, and ready to take Indian batting forward played whirlwind knocks to chase down the 360-run target set by Australia. It was kind of a small revenge. Australia had smashed 359 in the 2003 World Cup final in South Africa and India failed despite another Delhiite Virender Sehwag's brave knock. This time though, Virat (100*) and Dhawan (95) in the company of Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma (141*) put the Aussie bowling to sword and scored at 8.32 runs per over. India won with 6.3 overs to spare.Virat scored the fastest ton by an Indian and the seventh fastest overall. This was his 16th ton.
"We started off very well and once we got the momentum, we just carried
on. Both (Rohit and I) are doing a good job for the country. We
didn't want to play rash shots early, we opened up only later. I am
happy for Rohit that he got the century today, because he was playing
well in the last few months," said Shikhar after the game.
Mate Virat said, "I kept telling Rohit that it was his day, but I
kept hitting the ball very well. I didn't bat in the nets yesterday,
just had a few throw downs. I wasn't worried about the short-pitched
stuff, i pulled a few of them early and then they started bowling
half-volleys. Rohit is the best of the young lot that we have and he is
the most dangerous T20 player, so it was a privilege to watch him from
the other end."
